Deck Cleaning and Staining

Our specialty is extending the life of your deck; they are not cheap investments, so it would be a shame to let them fade and rot. Many companies just go straight to sanding your deck to remove the old stain and discoloration. This allows them to then stain the deck on the same day, as their cleaning process keeps the deck dry. We start with a stain and oil stripper, and then scrub and pressure wash the deck. This ensures that the oils which have penetrated the wood can be removed. We then use brightener which resets the PH balance in the wood bringing back its natural color and reversing the graying. Then we allow the deck to dry for a day or two before returning to stain the deck. This process does take longer, but it ensures a deeper and better clean vs just sanding off the top. I spent a lot of time just talking about the maintenance, but know that we take the same level of care and detail when it comes to building as well.

Deck Building: Cedar

Cedar is one of the more common options in the PNW. It has similar qualities to the hardwoods that make it resistant to rot, but cheaper. When maintained yearly, it can last 20 – 30 years.

Other softwoods that have been pressure treated may be a little cheaper, and as long as you aren’t looking for a long term solution, they can be a great option. Due to the fact that their protective aspects are based on chemicals, they do have some downsides with splintering and being a health hazard.

Deck Building: Hardwood

Common hardwood options include: Cumaru, Tigerwood, and Garapa, but most common is Ipe. These have a natural tendency to be mildew and rot resistant. With proper yearly maintenance, they can last anywhere from 30 – 100 years. If it has been a while and they start to gray, we can still bring it back to its original glory, but it takes more effort.

If you aren’t wanting to do the yearly maintenance to keep these decks looking nice, you may be better off going with a composite that is in the same price point with lots of design options, but with easier maintenance requirements.

Deck Building: Trex

TREX DECKING is a popular composite decking brand. These composite decks are a wood and plastic recycling mixture that is extremely durable. These deck boards can last 20 – 30 years without fading. Maintenance is also pretty simple. With an annual pressure cleaning, they can return to the same state as they were when they were first installed. The one downside is that these boards can react poorly in extreme temperature changes and can bow and warp more than natural wood.
